Synthesis of Adult Learning Knowledge
I facilitate training for child nutrition professionals. This group of learners prefers training that helps them to solve authentic, real-world problems. Problem-based learning (PBL) is an excellent instructional strategy for this group since it is a student-centered, self-directed learning strategy that uses relevant, authentic, real-world problems. Allowing learners to choose what problem they will address based on their unique needs significantly boosts the learners' internal motivation to learn since the problem is based on their interests and is relevant to them. Thus, encouraging learning transfer. PBL helps adult learners gain new knowledge and learn how to immediately apply that new knowledge (near and far learning transfer) in the real world. PBL encourages the learner to be independent and to take ownership of their learning. My role is that of a facilitator, guide, and coach. PBL also supports adults becoming lifelong learners and self-directed in their learning.
