Learning Assessment Techniques (LATs)

What are Learning Assessment Techniques (LATs)? They are techniques that bridge "teaching and assessment together to create a seamless and unified process." (Barkley & Major, 2016; p. xiv). LATs are quick and effective ways to assess student learning. The three components of LATs include identifying meaningful learning goals, using an active learning instructional activity that requires students to provide direct evidence of learning by creating a tangible artifact that an instructor can assess, and providing guidance on analyzing the artifact. LATs support instruction that promotes significant learning. The LATs that I have implemented in my training now allow me to quickly evaluate student comprehension and make adjustments to address any learning gaps identified. Below are training examples of how I use LATs.
