How to Use Educational Games

Games are a very versatile learning strategy. They can be used at any time in training with any group size. The time required for games can range from 5 minutes to one hour. They can be used as openers or ice breakers. This can help to set the tone for training and relax participants. They can be used as energizers when you might need to boost the energy level of the class or for reviewing subject content. They also can be a great way to close your training.
It's essential when using games to know your audience and assess what type of games will work best with your group keeping in mind to focus on instructional use. All games are not appropriate for all audiences. When completing your assessment, it's critical for you to determine your comfort zone with any game. If you feel even slightly uncomfortable with the game, then it's not the best choice for you. Your audience will sense your discomfort and share in your feelings. Always debrief after playing a game, explaining how the game enhanced the student's learning of a topic. Don't assume that your students will automatically know this. Be flexible and creative when using games to meet your unique audience's needs.
