Lesson Plan Development Process

Wlodkowski's (2008)The Motivational Framework for Culturally Responsive Teaching is a model that consists of four overlapping motivational conditions that facilitators can create or enhance to improve the chances that learning will occur. The overlapping motivational conditions produce a synergy effect on learning. It allows me to be more thoughtful and intentional in my efforts to encourage motivation and thus learning. This is the model that I used for developing my lesson plans.

The four motivational conditions are:

Establishing inclusion: creating a learning environment where all learners and instructors feel safe, respected, and connected.

Developing attitude: creating a positive outlook toward the learning experience through personal relevance and choice.

Enhancing meaning: creating challenging, thoughtful learning experiences that embrace the learners' perspectives and values/mores.

Engendering competence: creating an understanding that learners are gaining knowledge in something they value.

The link provides three examples of how to apply the framework to diverse professional learning events.
